We are seeking a Senior API Gateway Developer with deep expertise in designing, implementing, and managing internal and external API Gateways for both enterprise and partner integrations to work in the Income IT Platform team.
This role will own the end-to-end API lifecycle – from platform configuration, security governance, onboarding automation, and developer portal customization, to performance optimization and monitoring – ensuring APIs meet high standards of scalability, security, and usability.
You will work closely with platform, security, DevOps, and partner onboarding teams, bringing hands-on skills in Layer7 (or equivalent API Gateway platforms), API governance, developer experience, and CI/CD integration for automated deployments.
Your valuable technical skill will play a vital role in the advancement and growth of the API road map and help Income cope with the fast-changing business and digital transformation by evolving from monolith systems to APIs based architecture.
This role involves significant responsibilities in API Gateway development and management, integration standards, performance optimization, platform engineering, and onboarding processes.
Responsibilities
API Gateway Development & Management
- Design, configure, and maintain Layer7 or equivalent API Gateways.
- Implement internal gateway (intranet/API mesh) and external partner gateway environments.
- Develop and enforce security policies – OAuth2, JWT, mTLS, IP whitelisting, rate limiting, and threat protection.
- Apply API governance rules to ensure compliance with enterprise standards.
- Troubleshooting and resolving bugs, issues, and enhancement throughout the project and software lifecycle – from project to BAU.
- Conduct software tests, security tests, performance tests, performance tuning code review, and Unit, System, Integration, and User Acceptance Test Phases.
- Provide other ad-hoc technical support or documentation as requested by project stakeholders towards the project delivery.
Integration Standards & Data Formats
- Work with multiple formats – JSON, XML, SOAP, CSV.
- Implement RESTful APIs, GraphQL, and SOAP-to-REST transformations.
- Ensure robust error handling, schema validation, and backward compatibility.
Performance Optimization & Monitoring
- Fine-tune API performance (caching, connection pooling, payload optimization).
- Configure and maintain alerts & monitoring using Prometheus, Grafana, ELK, or Splunk.
- Analyze API usage patterns and implement scalability improvements.
- Set up automated health checks and synthetic monitoring.
- Integrate API Gateway deployments into CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, GitLab, AWS DevOps).
- Automate deployment workflows integrated with JIRA for change requests and approvals.
- Implement version control, rollback, and zero-downtime deployment strategies.
API Lifecycle & Onboarding
- Build onboarding workflows for internal teams and external partners including provisioning, key management, sandbox access, and SLA enforcement.
- Customize developer portals and API marketplaces for self-service onboarding.
- Automate partner onboarding with scripting (Python, Bash, Groovy, or equivalent).
- Maintain API documentation using Swagger/OpenAPI, Postman collections, and Confluence knowledge base articles.
Qualifications
- Education / Training: Degree/Diploma in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent.
- Minimum 5 years in API development/integration, minimum 3 years in API Gateway engineering.
- Hands-on expertise with Broadcom Layer7 API Gateway; exposure to Axway, Apigee, MuleSoft, Kong, AWS API Gateway, or Azure API Management.
- Strong knowledge of API security – OAuth2, mTLS, JWT, OpenID Connect.
- Experience in developer portal customization and marketplace setup.
- Basic Server side and Database knowledge.
- Good to have cloud (AWS) experience.
- DevOps & Automation expertise – CI/CD, JIRA integration, scripting (Python, Shell, Groovy).
- Monitoring & observability – Prometheus, Grafana, Splunk, ELK.
