We are Hiring

We are looking for a talented Senior Engineering Manager specifically in Backend to join our team.

Reporting directly to the CTO, your role will be integrated within the larger team within the BigPay Group as a critical technology leader leading teams and building features for all markets.

Role Description

Your core responsibilities include (but are not limited to)

Team Leadership & People Management

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of backend engineers across multiple experience levels

  • Drive hiring initiatives to build and scale the team, including candidate evaluation and interview processes

  • Foster a culture of continuous learning, innovation, and technical excellence

  • Conduct regular 1:1s, performance reviews, and career development planning for direct reports

  • Implement retention strategies and create growth pathways that align individual aspirations with business needs

  • Build and maintain high-performing, collaborative team dynamics within the squad structure

  • Based in Malaysia but technically direct a distributed team of backend engineers in one or more of the Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand markets 

  • Technical Leadership & Delivery

  • Provide architectural guidance and technical direction for backend systems and services

  • Conduct thorough code reviews and architecture reviews(RFCs) to ensure quality and scalability

  • Make strategic decisions about when to engage in hands-on coding versus focusing on leadership activities

  • Take ultimate accountability for technical deliverables and project outcomes from your team

  • Ensure systems are designed for reliability, performance, and maintainability at scale

  • Drive adoption of engineering best practices, tools, and methodologies, in alignment with Platform CoE

  • Champion engineering initiatives that improve developer productivity and system reliability, in alignment with Platform CoE

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner closely with Squads to translate business requirements into technical solutions, deployment and monitoring

  • Facilitate effective communication between technical and non-technical stakeholders

  • Participate in squad planning sessions and cross-team coordination efforts

  • Present technical concepts and project updates to executive leadership and other stakeholders, as needed

  • Potential representative of backend engineering to partners, regulators and other financial institutions in Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand.

  • Strategic Planning & Execution

  • Contribute to squad roadmap planning and resource allocation decisions

  • Balance technical debt management with feature development priorities

  • Drive estimation, planning, and delivery of complex backend initiatives

  • Identify and mitigate technical and operational risks

  • To be successful

    You should have:

  • Experience in leading tech teams and on-time delivery of large scale distributed systems with a bottoms-up understanding of system architecture, interactions and complexities at scale

  • Strong knowledge of system design, distributed systems architecture with proven experience of implementing the same, especially around money flows

  • Strong experience in delivery management, estimation, tracking to work closely with multiple squad leads to meet objectives

  • Strong knowledge of Java, Rust, or similar languages; experience with Rust, Springboot, Kotlin, Kafka, Kubernetes, Terraform, Google Cloud Platform is highly beneficial

  • Experience in operating production software systems at scale

  • Experience in build and run of regulated systems with high uptime requirements is highly desirable

  • Strong experience with distributed systems and micro-services

  • Deep understanding of engineering processes such as RFCs, Development best practices etc.

  • Experience working in a squad-type Agile environment across multiple functional guilds ( product, operations, backend, mobile etc.

    )

  • Outstanding communication skills to operate at various levels of abstraction across multiple stakeholders (from juniors to C-suite) and vendors

  • Capability to adapt to a dynamic, fast-paced environment

  • Be a self-starter with the ability to demonstrate value and add structured thinking to abstract problems to influence our talented backend engineers with the right guidance

  • Be a talent attraction magnet for potential new hires in backend engineering as a significant voice in the Malaysian technology community is highly sought after
