Overview
SPARC Unix Engineer installs, configures, and maintains SPARC/Solaris-based servers and systems.
Key responsibilities include system administration, managing hardware and software, developing automation scripts, providing technical support for complex issues, ensuring system backups and recovery, and documenting configurations.
This role requires strong problem-solving, analytical skills, and often involves collaborating with cross-functional teams and vendors to ensure optimal system uptime and meet business objectives.
Key Responsibilities
- System Implementation: Implement, and manage Unix-based infrastructure, including the SPARC hardware and Solaris operating system, to ensure high availability and performance.
Install, configure, and maintain SPARC servers and related hardware and software components.
- System Administration: Manage user accounts, access controls, system updates, and provide ongoing support for the Unix/Solaris environment.
- Performance & Optimization: Monitor system performance, conduct capacity planning, and tune servers to ensure optimal availability and resource utilization.
- Security: Implement security measures, conduct security assessments, and ensure compliance to protect systems and data.
- Automation: Develop and maintain automation scripts for tasks like system administration and updates to improve efficiency.
- Troubleshooting: Lead efforts to diagnose and resolve complex hardware and software issues, working with vendors when necessary.
- Backup & Recovery: Configure and maintain successful backup and disaster recovery processes and procedures.
- Documentation: Document system configurations, changes, standard operating procedures, and policies for future reference and knowledge transfer.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work with cross-functional teams (e.g., developers, project managers) to align system requirements with business goals and provide technical expertise.
Required Skills and Experience
- Operating Systems: Deep experience with Unix-based operating systems, particularly Solaris 9, 10 & 11, and knowledge of SPARC hardware.
Oracle VM for SPARC (aka ldom) & Solaris Zone.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in server installation, configuration, maintenance, scripting, and automation.
- Problem-Solving: Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills to address complex system issues.
- Communication: Ability to communicate technical issues and project status clearly to management and customers.
- Customer Focus: Skill in providing technical support and working with customers to ensure their needs are met.
